For the tenth consecutive year, Bastia-based artist Monique Yenco-Fusella is presenting her captivating collection of paintings at the Spaziu Pasquale-Paoli in Île-Rousse, with the exhibition running until August 10th. This milestone anniversary marks a decade of artistic dedication to the coastal town, where she has been faithfully exhibiting since 2015.

The comprehensive exhibition features approximately 80 paintings, representing several years of creative work, including previously unseen pieces that are being unveiled for the first time. This year's presentation stands out with remarkable innovations, including the artist's first foray into sculpture and her unique paintings created on recycled boat sails.

"I have painted the Balagne region extensively," Yenco-Fusella explains. "There's a unique luminosity here that I don't find anywhere else, not even in Bastia." Her deep connection to the region's distinctive light has become a defining characteristic of her artistic vision, inspiring countless works that capture the essence of this picturesque corner of Corsica.

The artist's diverse portfolio encompasses various aspects of Corsican life, from intimate scenes of daily life and historic citadels to bustling cafés and family-friendly beaches. She captures everyday moments with a distinctive free-flowing style, painting not only her native city of Bastia but also numerous other regions throughout Corsica, with particular emphasis on the Balagne area.

Her creative process begins with exploration and observation. She walks through different locations, photographing scenes and atmospheres that speak to her, then translates these experiences into oil paintings using her preferred artistic tools. "I use silicone tools, spatulas, and knives," the artist explains. "I paint with feeling and spontaneity, never creating identical works."

This year's exhibition introduces groundbreaking artistic innovations that expand beyond traditional canvas work. For the first time, Yenco-Fusella is presenting a sculptural piece – a carefully modeled female figurine positioned in front of one of her paintings. The sculpture recreates the motif of a woman depicted in one of her painted works, creating a fascinating dialogue between two-dimensional and three-dimensional art. The image extends from the canvas into real space, creating a striking mirror effect that challenges viewers' perceptions.

"I had wanted to try sculpture for a long time," shares Yenco-Fusella. "I took a workshop and absolutely loved it." This correspondence between volume and canvas creates a captivating visual experience that demonstrates the artist's willingness to push creative boundaries.

Another distinctive feature of this year's exhibition is her innovative use of recycled boat sails as painting surfaces. Three works have been created using this unconventional medium, with the sails stretched over stainless steel frames. However, only one of these unique pieces is displayed in Île-Rousse, as the others are too large for the exhibition space.

The inspiration for this nautical series came during a maritime experience. "I was on a catamaran when I had this idea," she says with a smile. "It took me a year to find a sail and figure out how to hang it without deforming it." This innovative approach reflects her strong connection to the island's maritime heritage and demonstrates her commitment to environmental consciousness through artistic recycling.

Yenco-Fusella's artistic journey began early, with her first painting created at age 14 and her first exhibition held in 1992. Throughout her career, she has remained true to her artistic vision despite facing gender-based challenges in the art world. "I was told that female painters are less well-regarded," she reflects. "I respond through my work."

Her dedication has yielded impressive results. With more than 1,000 artworks created, 100 exhibitions to her credit, and official recognition through listings with prestigious auction houses Drouot and Akoun, the artist has never stopped creating. Her persistence and talent have established her as a significant figure in contemporary Corsican art.

The public response to her work continues to be enthusiastic. Each day during the exhibition, nearly 100 visitors spend time contemplating her diverse artworks in Île-Rousse. "What I prefer most is meeting the public," affirms the artist. "What they tell me nourishes my creativity."

This landmark year brings additional recognition through the publication of a retrospective book featuring her artistic journey, accompanied by texts written by her former art professor, José Tomasi. This comprehensive volume serves as both a celebration of her decade-long relationship with Île-Rousse and a testament to her broader artistic evolution.

The exhibition showcases Yenco-Fusella's mastery of color and light, with vibrant hues that capture the Mediterranean atmosphere that has inspired her work for decades. Her paintings reveal both technical skill and emotional depth, reflecting her deep understanding of Corsican landscapes, culture, and daily life.

Visitors to the Spaziu Pasquale-Paoli can experience this remarkable collection of works that spans traditional painting techniques and innovative artistic approaches, all unified by the artist's distinctive vision and her profound connection to the Balagne region's unique character and luminous beauty.
