K-pop artist G-Dragon, the former frontman of BIGBANG, was questioned by the police on Monday regarding allegations of illegal drug use. The investigation into the singer and rapper, whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong, is part of a broader crackdown on illegal drugs initiated by the conservative government led by President Yoon Suk Yeol.
The allegations emerged in late October and caused a temporary decline in the shares of some K-pop agencies, including YG Entertainment, which was G-Dragon's former agency. However, these share prices have since rebounded.
Kwon, aged 35, briefly addressed the media before entering a police station in Incheon, where he asserted his innocence and denied any wrongdoing. He emphasized that there was no truth to the accusation of illegal drug-related crimes.

Over the weekend, Lee Sun-kyun, the star of the Oscar-winning film "Parasite," was also questioned by the police on a separate allegation of illegal drug use. Lee chose not to respond to questions about drug use as he left the police station, simply stating that he had answered all the police's inquiries to the best of his knowledge.
Recent months have seen a series of arrests related to drug charges, involving chaebol heirs and celebrities. This has prompted authorities to intensify efforts in combating narcotics and conducting customs inspections.
South Korea has stringent drug laws, with crimes typically carrying sentences of at least six months in prison, and repeat offenders and dealers facing penalties of up to 14 years.
Drug rehab advocates attribute the increased accessibility of illegal drugs to social media and foreign travel.
Notably, G-Dragon is not the first member of BIGBANG to face criminal charges. In 2017, T.O.P., legally known as Choi Seung-hyun, received a suspended 10-month jail sentence for marijuana use after pleading guilty and seeking leniency to avoid a prison term. Seungri, whose real name is Lee Seung-hyun, was convicted in 2021 of collusion in a tax evasion, bribery, and prostitution scheme, serving an 18-month prison sentence.
BIGBANG, a prominent K-pop group, dominated the industry following their debut in 2006. G-Dragon and several other former and current members have pursued solo careers.
