The stage is set for the 19th Jecheon International Music & Film Festival (JIMFF), slated to commence on August 10 in Jecheon, North Chungcheong Province. Despite facing budget cuts and organizational changes, this year's festival promises to return to its origins under the theme "Da Capo," signifying a fresh start.
Eagerly anticipated by cinephiles and music enthusiasts alike, this year's JIMFF will kick off with the screening of the Japanese animation sensation "Blue Giant." Originally written and illustrated by Shinichi Ishizuka and featuring music by Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara, the film follows the journey of Jass, a student band comprising tenor saxophonist Dai, pianist Sawabe, and drummer Tamada, as they embark on various musical performances around town. The manga series, released in 2013, swiftly garnered global acclaim, with the film adaptation captivating audiences in Japan upon its release in February. Korean audiences will be treated to the film for the first time during the JIMFF, with a local theatrical release planned for the second half of the year.

While the JIMFF has faced challenges recently, including financial deficits and staff reorganization, the organizing committee remains resolute in its commitment to revitalize the festival. This year's budget stands at approximately 67 percent of the previous year's, amounting to approximately 2.9 billion won. As a result of the budget constraints, the festival has streamlined its events and programs. However, the JIMFF will maintain its hallmark of blending film and music, offering an array of events that highlight the creative fusion of both art forms.
One of the festival's notable highlights will be a tribute concert honoring the late Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away in March. The concert serves as a poignant tribute to his iconic contributions to the world of music and film.
Despite the challenges faced, the JIMFF remains steadfast in its commitment to celebrating the intersection of music and cinema, bringing audiences a diverse and enriching experience that transcends borders and genres. As the festival opens its doors to film and music enthusiasts from around the world, it embraces a spirit of renewal, setting the stage for a triumphant "Da Capo" edition that reaffirms its standing as a cherished cultural event on the global stage.
