Pentagram has announced the appointment of Hugh Miller as a new partner at its prestigious London office, bringing aboard a seasoned graphic designer and art director who has spent two decades building an exceptional reputation in the creative industry. Miller, who has worked with major corporations and cultural institutions alike, is known for his ability to bring clarity, precision, and elegance to every project he undertakes.
Miller's most recent role was with Ford's research-focused Human-Centered Design unit, where he collaborated with a global team to explore innovative approaches to the future of mobility. Prior to Ford, he held significant positions within the brand teams at tech giants Nokia and Microsoft, where he played a crucial role in defining both companies' visual identities and brand strategies. His expertise spans seamlessly between commercial and cultural sectors, from developing comprehensive strategies for Fortune 500 clients to creating distinctive identities for startups, museums, and art galleries.
In 2012, Miller co-founded the London office of international design studio BOND, where he spearheaded projects that masterfully combined sharp conceptual thinking with material sensitivity and exceptional craftsmanship. Earlier in his career at Spin, he made significant contributions to major advertising campaigns and brand identity projects for high-profile clients including the Whitechapel Gallery, Nike, MTV, and Haunch of Venison gallery.
Miller's exceptional work has garnered recognition from numerous prestigious organizations and award programs. He has received honors from D&AD, the Type Directors Club in New York, Design Week Awards, the Art Directors Club, and the Clio Awards. His projects have been featured in the Creative Review Annual and showcased in the Design Museum's highly regarded Designs of the Year exhibition. Notably, his record sleeve design for SO: LO's "At the End of the World, Plant a Tree" earned him the inaugural Freda Sack Award, which represents the highest honor bestowed by the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD).
Typography serves as the cornerstone of Miller's design philosophy and creative approach. He views type not merely as a functional element but as both a source of inspiration and a powerful storytelling device, with his extensive design archive reflecting a lifelong passion and curiosity for typographic excellence. Beyond his studio practice, Miller maintains an active presence in design education, serving as a lecturer at Kingston School of Art and the University of Greenwich. He also holds a position on the ISTD board and has been a featured speaker at prominent design events including TypoCircle and Eye magazine's Type Tuesday series. Additionally, he is a distinguished member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), the exclusive international association of graphic designers.
Earlier this year, Miller received further recognition when Creative Boom named him one of its "20 Most Inspiring Graphic Designers for 2025," cementing his status as one of the industry's most influential practitioners.
Paula Scher, a partner at Pentagram's New York office, expressed her enthusiasm about Miller's appointment, stating: "Hugh brings tremendous expertise that stretches from large, beautifully handled corporate projects to cultural works of immense beauty and wit. I had seen Hugh's work long before I knew who he was. I found out who he was a few years ago when I judged the London-based ISTD competition, and Hugh was the first prize winner. I had enthusiastically voted for him without any idea that some day this person I had never met before would become my partner. That's as it should be."
Fellow Pentagram partner Matt Willey also praised the new addition to the team, commenting: "Hugh's work always feels so effortless to me; sophisticated and timeless, and intelligent and beautiful. He's just a wonderful designer and, much more importantly, a lovely human. I'm really excited that he's joining Pentagram; we're extremely lucky to have him."
Miller's arrival comes at a particularly significant moment for Pentagram London, as the office is transitioning into a brand-new three-story studio space located in the heart of Islington. This move represents a new chapter for the London operation and provides enhanced facilities for the growing team. "It's an exciting time to be joining at this pivotal moment," Miller commented about his new role. "The new studio brings a renewed energy and opportunities to build new connections. I'm looking forward to contributing to the culture and continuing my craft on an even bigger platform."
