Frieze Seoul, the highly anticipated global art fair, is set to return to the bustling capital of South Korea from September 6 to 9, promising an electrifying second edition featuring a robust lineup of Asia-based galleries. Building upon the success of its debut in Asia last year, the fair will once again take place at COEX in southern Seoul, with over 40 percent of the 120 participating exhibitors hailing from the region.
In addition to the main show, Frieze Seoul has curated an array of specially designed programs that will bring music, films, exhibitions, talks, and soirees to art enthusiasts and visitors alike. A highlight of the fair is Frieze Film, a captivating showcase of 14 Korean artists working in time-based media. Curated by Kim Sung-woo and Sungah Serena Choo, the program, titled "It was the way of walking through narrative," will feature screenings of video works by artists such as Jun So-jung, Hong Lee Hyun-sook, and Kim Hyo-jae at four non-profit venues across the city and on Frieze's official website from August 22 to September 9.
The fair will also host free talk sessions in collaboration with Kiaf Seoul, Korea's longest-running contemporary art fair organized by the Galleries Association of Korea, and Korean Art Management Service (KAMS). Distinguished industry professionals and creators, including Chong Do-ryun from M+ in Hong Kong, Yung Ma from the Hayward Gallery in London, Noam Segal from the Guggenheim in New York, and the Seoul-based artist duo Moon Kyung-won and Jeon Joon-ho, will share their insights on topics like the Asian art fairs ecosystem, Korean experimental art, and the impact of artificial intelligence on art.
A new addition to this year's lineup is Frieze Music, making its debut in Seoul with a live performance by Korean rapper Colde at OHHO in Seongsu-dong on September 8. The fair's collaboration with major local art institutions, including the Arts Council Korea (ARKO), is set to enhance the city's grassroots arts and culture scene. Special exhibitions will be showcased at 35 non-profit, alternative spaces selected by ARKO and Frieze Film curators during Frieze Week from September 4 to 10.
Frieze Week 2023 will further elevate the artistic spirit with late-night gallery openings and soirees in three of Seoul's major art districts, namely Hannam-dong, Cheongdam-dong, and Samcheong-dong, on September 5, 6, and 7, respectively.
Concurrently with Frieze Seoul, the 22nd edition of Kiaf Seoul will bring together 211 galleries from 20 countries. The satellite art fair, Kiaf Plus, will feature 30 emerging art dealers showcasing up-and-coming creators, while "Gray Box Area" will present an immersive exhibition of 10 Korean new media artists.
As visitors anticipate a captivating journey through the world of art, a joint ticket will once again grant access to both Frieze and Kiaf Seoul, ensuring an enriching and unforgettable experience for all attendees.
