Renowned filmmaker Park Chan-wook, celebrated for his Cannes-winning films, has once again captivated audiences with his latest directorial venture—a commercial for Hey Dealer, a mobile app designed for used-car buyers. Starring talented actress Han So-hee, the non-feature film work bears Park's distinctive directing style and has already gone viral, accumulating nearly 230,000 views on the company's YouTube channel just two days after its release.
The commercial, resembling a miniature yet compelling film, has garnered praise from fans for its impressive storytelling. One viewer commented, "[It is] quite impressive. It is like a very short but engaging film, which makes me watch it again and again."
True to Park's cinematic prowess, the short film is characterized by his signature cinematography, offering viewers breathtaking scenery and a visual feast for the senses. It pays homage to his critically acclaimed films, including the internationally renowned "Oldboy" (2003), "Sympathy For Lady Vengeance" (2005), "Thirst" (2009), and "Decision to Leave."
Expressing his interest in the project, Park shared his thoughts in a video released by Hey Dealer, stating, "I became interested in the project after I heard the company would like to make a commercial inspired by my films." This collaboration allowed the director to infuse his unique artistic voice into the promotional piece, creating an experience that transcends the traditional boundaries of advertising.
For Han So-hee, best known for her role in Netflix's "My Name" (2021), working with the acclaimed director was a dream come true. As a long-time fan of Park Chan-wook, she described the opportunity as a special experience, saying, "I always hoped to collaborate with Park, whom I have admired for a long time."
Park's commercial venture for Hey Dealer adds another notable achievement to his illustrious career. The Cannes-winning director has consistently pushed artistic boundaries, cementing himself as one of the most exceptional voices in contemporary cinema. Last year, he directed a short film titled "Life is But a Dream" as part of Apple's "Shot on iPhone" marketing campaign, showcasing his ability to create captivating narratives even within the constraints of a commercial format.
Looking ahead, Park is set to unveil a highly anticipated seven-episode series titled "The Sympathizer" on HBO next year. Starring the acclaimed actor Robert Downey Jr., the series is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Vietnamese-American author Viet Thanh Nguyen. "The Sympathizer" follows the gripping story of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy who seeks refuge in the United States during the final stages of the Vietnam War.
With his recent commercial success and an upcoming television series poised to make waves, Park Chan-wook continues to push artistic boundaries and leave an indelible mark on the world of cinema. His dedication to storytelling and his ability to mesmerize audiences make him a true visionary in the industry, further solidifying his status as a revered filmmaker.
