In a departure from the norm of drawing inspiration from cinematic predecessors, first-time director Jung Woo-sung consciously veered away from established conventions in the creation of his new noir film, "A Man of Reason."
During a recent group interview with local reporters, Jung remarked on the pervasive trend of Korean films emulating one another under the guise of commercial viability. Rejecting this pattern, he imparted a distinct directive to the production team and actors of "A Man of Reason": abstain from seeking references. The acclaimed actor and director articulated his intention to eschew the replication of familiar styles and structures inherent in typical Korean commercial cinema.
The narrative of "A Man of Reason" follows Soo-hyuk, portrayed by Jung himself, a man who emerges from a decade-long prison sentence, determined to leave behind his criminal past after shielding his gang boss. His aspirations for a peaceful life unravel when his former boss employs a contract killer to pursue him and abduct his daughter, prompting a harrowing confrontation with the repercussions of his past choices.
Jung, drawing from his extensive 30-year acting career, deftly navigated his directorial debut by employing skills honed on film sets. He highlighted the value of decisiveness and leadership, traits he believed were crucial for orchestrating complex productions and guiding the crew through unforeseen challenges.
In response to inquiries about the thematic core of "A Man of Reason," Jung elucidated that the film did not aspire to deliver a grand message. Instead, he aimed to explore the intricacies of various characters, presenting a layered portrayal of human traits and shortcomings. The director expressed a desire to prove that a compelling film could arise from this character-driven approach, devoid of an overarching thematic agenda.
Jung, candidly discussing his dual roles as an actor and director, found both pursuits equally compelling. His prior on-screen experiences facilitated seamless communication and collaboration on set. Reflecting on his formative years under the guidance of director Kim Sung-su, known for their work together in the 1997 film "Beat," Jung commended Kim's exceptional directorial approach and credited him as a source of inspiration for his own directorial journey.
The production of "A Man of Reason" encountered its share of challenges, including the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the personal loss of Jung's father in 2020. Undeterred, Jung exhibited a steadfast commitment to his craft, ensuring that the film's progress remained unhindered by personal hardships.
Set to premiere in theaters on August 15, "A Man of Reason" stands as a testament to Jung Woo-sung's audacious artistic vision and determination, promising audiences an unconventional and thought-provoking cinematic experience.
