‘A burst of color’ opened at Gallery Choi in Seoul

“All of Gukdaeho’s works are urban and sophisticated. The colors, planes, lines, and division of planes appearing in his works immerse the Gallery visitor in an instant. His work tells a story. His exhibition is his diary decorated with colors.” Choi Jaehong, the CEO of Gallery Choi, who planned ‘A BURST OF COLOR’, said.

‘A BURST OF COLOR’ is being held at Gallery Choi from June 9 to July 6, 2022.

Gukdaeho graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Seoul National University. In the 1990s, he went to Paris, France to study his art. He studied painting at the National Academy of Fine Arts in France and plastic arts at the graduate school of the University of Paris VIII.

He immersed himself in abstract works based on color and planes. Since 2007, Gukdaeho has captured images of cities of art such as New York, Paris, and Venice in his work.

His works, like shaky photos, are not real urban landscapes, but a different world reborn with his own colors. Various colors present their own abstract world. In other words, it is his unique abstract language. He has been constantly researching colors for over 10 years. His research has been revealed in various forms from his early works to the present.

He collected small colored canvases and attaches them to the exhibition space like a patchwork. His hand movements and brushstrokes appear on the planes like living creatures. The strong brush strokes maximized the quality of the paint on the canvas surface. The act of drawing itself is emphasized. His works have evolved through 'stripes' and 'color and planes series'.

Gukdaeho said in the writer's note:
“One of the most important elements in abstract art is color. Having worked constantly on the subject of color, I have continued to express various expressions through the link of color. I ask myself why I keep expressing these colors over and over. Sometimes I thin the oil paint to make a flat surface, and other times I squeeze the paint tube directly on the canvas and draw it. I also use a squeegee or other tools to make the textures of the paint masses different. Expressing the density, speed, and direction of paint in such a variable way for each work is to pursue the essential aspect of painting.”

In February 2017, at the exhibition ‘Color, Tone, and House’ held at the Whanki Museum in Seoul, he put about 230 color fields of colors he had collected over the past 20 years into a white-cube. This exhibition served as an effective opportunity to promote his work to the outside world.

“The number of colors that the human eye can distinguish is about 8 million. Even the same green color is subtly different from each other. I want to see 8 million colors with my own eyes. Because I am a curious person, This curiosity is the driving force behind my work.” He said.
