Award-winning director Park Chan-wook, renowned for his cinematic masterpieces, delved into his groundbreaking collaboration with streaming giant Netflix during a thought-provoking roundtable discussion held in Seoul. Joined by Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, who embarked on a two-day visit to the city, Park shared insights and ideas on the future landscape of the digital content market.
In the discussion, Park revealed details about his involvement as a co-screenwriter and producer in Netflix's upcoming film project, "War and Revolt," marking his first-ever venture with the streaming platform. Expressing his desire to secure investment, Park acknowledged Netflix as an ideal partner for this ambitious undertaking.
Having dedicated significant time to crafting the screenplay, Park shared, "I completed the scenario for this project in 2019. As a period martial arts flick, it necessitated a certain level of investment. In that aspect, I had a fruitful collaboration with Netflix." During the online talk, which was streamed to aspiring filmmakers and content creators in Korea, Park humorously added, "That doesn't mean I received an ample amount of investment. The more, the better."
Park also commended Netflix for its discerning approach to investments, particularly emphasizing their consideration of commercial potential. "Different investors and studios evaluate a project's potential in varying ways," Park explained. "Netflix has promised me the best support, and I've been thoroughly enjoying working with them."
When it comes to creative control, Park quipped, "So far, there has been no interference from Netflix at all, but I'll have to wait until the editing is done." It is worth noting that the production of "War and Revolt" is yet to commence.
According to Netflix Korea, the period film will feature acclaimed actor Gang Dong-won as Cheon-young, the loyal servant of Jong-ryeo (played by Park Jung-min). Set in the Joseon era, the narrative will follow Cheon-young's transformation into a military officer in King Seonjo's army, leading to a fateful reunion with Jong-ryeo.
The film aims to explore the profound friendship that blossoms between Jong-ryeo and Cheon-young, transcending societal divisions. Notable actors Kim Shin-rok from the 2021 Netflix series "Hellbound" and Jung Sung-il from the 2022 Netflix series "The Glory" will also join the cast, portraying pivotal characters in the tale.
Helming the project is director Kim Sang-man, renowned for the 2010 mystery thriller "Midnight FM." "War and Revolt" will be produced by Moho Film, a production company led by the visionary director Park Chan-wook.
As Park embarks on this groundbreaking collaboration with Netflix, audiences worldwide eagerly await the convergence of his unparalleled storytelling and the streaming giant's global reach. This partnership sets the stage for an innovative and promising era in the realm of digital content.
