In an entertainment landscape often dominated by fantastical twists, MBC's latest offering, "My Dearest," stands as a refreshing departure, opting to present a poignant and traditional narrative set against the backdrop of the Qing invasion of Joseon in the 17th century.
Fronted by acclaimed actors Namkoong Min and Ahn Eun-jin, "My Dearest" distinguishes itself by eschewing the prevalent fantasy elements that have come to define many historical dramas. Absent are the reincarnations, mythical creatures, and superhuman powers that often grace the screen, replaced instead by a deeply resonant tale of love and resilience amidst the ravages of war.
The series tactfully transports viewers to the winter of 1636, a period marked by the tumultuous Qing invasion of Joseon, a pivotal chapter in the history of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Producer Kim Sung-yong, who orchestrates this captivating saga, expressed his commitment to historical accuracy during a press conference held at MBC Hall in western Seoul.
"Our drama is set in that period," affirmed Kim, emphasizing the significance of portraying characters navigating through a time of upheaval, seeking solace, love, and hope. "My Dearest" emerges as a canvas that faithfully paints the portrait of an era shaken by profound events.
Namkoong Min, who portrays Lee Jang-hyun opposite Ahn's Yoo Gil-chae, lends his prowess to a romantic role for the first time in five years, accompanied by his debut in a period piece after a decade. His decision to join the project, as articulated during the press conference, was primarily driven by the compelling narrative structure rather than the romantic aspect.
"Romance was just a part of that," Namkoong clarified, affirming the uniqueness of the romance depicted in "My Dearest" as a profound and heartrending portrayal of love.
For Ahn Eun-jin, the role of Gil-chae marks her inaugural lead role in a period piece. Overcoming initial challenges, she immersed herself in the character with unwavering determination.
"I required a lot of practice and loading for the role, so to speak," reflected Ahn, crediting her colleagues and the producer for their guidance. As she gradually embodied the character of Gil-chae, Ahn found herself captivated by the experience of filming in picturesque locations across Korea.
The drama also features notable supporting performances from Lee Hak-joo, Lee Da-in, and Kim Yun-woo, with Lee Da-in making a triumphant return to the screen after her recent marriage to singer Lee Seung-gi.
"My Dearest" promises an evocative narrative enriched by historical authenticity, human resilience, and unwavering love. The series debuted on Friday evening at 9:50 p.m. on MBC, offering audiences the opportunity to immerse themselves in a world of passion and survival. For those seeking a departure from fantasy-laden narratives, "My Dearest" beckons as a captivating journey into the depths of human emotion amidst the tapestry of history.
