Hybe x Geffen Records
In a bold move that underscores the ever-expanding reach of K-pop, South Korea's entertainment conglomerate Hybe, renowned for catapulting BTS to global stardom, has partnered with Geffen Records, an affiliate of Universal Music Group. The result of this unique collaboration is "The Debut: Dream Academy," a global girl group audition project that promises to redefine the music industry landscape.
Hybe's announcement on Monday, made from its headquarters in Korea, revealed plans to hold a press conference in Los Angeles, unveiling the culmination of two years of joint efforts with Geffen Records. This ambitious endeavor will spotlight a handpicked ensemble of twenty talented trainees from across the globe, selected from an astonishing pool of 120,000 applicants who vied for the coveted spots. The press conference is set to serve as an introduction to these aspiring stars, where they will share their personal stories and aspirations before embarking on their journey to claim a coveted debut.
Bang Si-hyuk, Hybe's visionary founder and chairman, will join John Janick, CEO and chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, in presenting the initiative's vision, goals, and operational procedures. The project itself operates under the umbrella of Hybe x Geffen Records, a joint venture that crystallized the partnership's shared aspirations. At the helm of this dynamic alliance stand HxG President Mitra Drab and Executive Creator Son Sung-deuk, both set to grace the press conference with their presence.
This unveiling marks the commencement of a 12-week audition period, a phase that will be globally accessible through Hybe's official YouTube channel and the dedicated fan community platform, Weverse. The exact details of other broadcasting avenues are expected to be disclosed in due course, according to Hybe officials.
In November 2021, the genesis of "The Debut: Dream Academy" began with an open call for applicants, laying the foundation for the creation of an unprecedented girl group. Crafted under the combined labels of Hybe and the influence of Geffen Records, this upcoming ensemble promises to break new ground as the first pop group produced in the United States through the time-honored "K-pop training system."
Traditionally, talents recruited overseas would find their way to Korea for training and eventual debuts. However, this venture heralds a groundbreaking departure, marking the first instance where the "K-pop production system" will nurture a pop group from inception on American soil. Hybe, in a statement on Monday, emphasized the groundbreaking nature of the project, asserting its significance not only for K-pop but for the entire global music panorama.
"With unwavering commitment, vast resources, and a profound understanding of artist production, we are poised to introduce an unparalleled musical journey to fans worldwide," Hybe declared, encapsulating the revolutionary essence of this transcontinental musical endeavor.
