at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art(MMCA)
Lee Kun-hee Collection Special Exhibition: Lee Jung-seop will be held at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art(MMCA), Seoul from the 12th of next month to the 23rd of April 2023.
In this exhibition, a total of about 100 pieces, including 90 pieces of Lee Jung-seop's works from Lee Kun-hee Collection (Former Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee, who died in 2020) and 10 pieces from the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, are on display. This exhibition is the second Lee Kun-hee collection to be officially held.
An official from the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) said on July 20, “Through this exhibition, we want to introduce high-quality Korean art to the public and introduce Korean works of high value to the public.”
Lee Jung-seop (1916-1956) was a painter who never let go of his passion for art until his death. In particular, he painted a lot of cows while he was alive. His 'Bull' (Lee Kun-hee's collection), introduced in this exhibition, became a hot topic in 2006, when it was auctioned for millions of dollars.
Although he is now very famous as an artist, he died at the young age of 39, and he was not recognized as an artist while he was alive. After the 1970s, as his artistic soul was newly illuminated in various media, he became one of the most famous painters in Korea.
This exhibition is divided into two parts. The two compositions are his work in the early 1940s and the late 1950s.
In the first half, Lee Jung-seop's work while studying in Japan and his work in Wonsan will be exhibited. Pencil drawings and postcards are included in the first half.
In the second half, his heyday works will be exhibited while he was active in Tongyeong, Seoul, and Daegu. They are silver paper prints, letter prints, etc.
This exhibition is characterized by the combination of the materials used by Lee Jung-seop and the date of his work. It has the advantage of being able to examine various aspects of artist Lee Jung-seop.
