BARUNSON E&A
Tensions have flared as the family of the late director Kim Ki-young seeks an injunction to halt the screening of the upcoming film "Cobweb," alleging that the movie depicts their patriarch in an unfavorable light.
The dispute unfolded as the Seoul Central District Court convened its first hearing on Thursday to review the injunction filed by Kim Dong-yang, the son of the esteemed director, against Anthology Studios, the primary production company behind "Cobweb." While the film revolves around a director in the 1970s on the cusp of completing a film who clashes with colleagues, its producers argue that it is not a biopic centered on Kim Ki-young.
Even director Kim Jee-woon, responsible for "Cobweb," was cited during the hearing as drawing inspiration from the late Kim Ki-young. The family emphasized that the Cannes International Film Festival invitation for "Cobweb" originally featured the central character as "Kim Ki-yeol," donning glasses and holding a pipe, evoking strong associations with Kim Ki-young.
The family further contended that the portrayal of the character is undeniably negative and constitutes a clear violation of Kim Ki-young's personality rights.
Anthology Studios refuted these allegations, asserting that "Cobweb" pays tribute to several directors from the 1970s but is not a biographical account of Kim Ki-young's life. The production company highlighted that a disclaimer is prominently displayed before the screening, clearly disassociating the film from any specific individual.
Meanwhile, "Mount Chiak," another film that faced a previous injunction suit (ultimately dismissed), has experienced disappointing performance, attracting a mere 2,400 viewers as of Thursday. The movie is rooted in an urban legend involving gruesome murders and dismembered bodies buried at Mount Chiak in Wonju, Gangwon. The city and various social groups had previously sought an injunction against the film.
As the legal battle ensues over "Cobweb," it underscores the complexities of artistic interpretation and the challenges surrounding the portrayal of historical figures in cinematic storytelling.
