RM, the prominent leader of the globally acclaimed K-pop group BTS, has vehemently denied accusations of harboring Islamophobic sentiments following a recent controversy sparked by his Instagram post.

The controversy erupted when RM recommended the 2012 song "Bad Religion" by American singer-songwriter Frank Ocean to his followers on Instagram, on August 16. Online users swiftly accused the BTS frontman of being Islamophobic, citing certain lines in the song's lyrics that they claimed made derogatory references to Islam due to its condemnation of homosexuality. The contentious lines in question include: "If it brings me to my knees, it's a bad religion."

In response to the allegations, RM promptly addressed the issue on the fan platform Weverse, on August 30. He refuted any malicious intent and made it clear that he harbors profound respect for all faiths and religions.

"There's a constant insistence that I have insulted the Islamic religion, but that's simply not true," RM asserted. "There was no intention or purpose behind it, and I hold deep respect for all faiths and religions. It is just a song, so please refrain from speculating on my words and accept me for who I am."

RM remained unapologetic, emphasizing that he was sharing his standpoint rather than offering an apology. He underlined his right to express his truth as a 30-year-old artist.

This incident is not the first instance of a K-pop star being accused of harboring Islamophobic sentiments. In April, Jisoo of the girl group BLACKPINK faced criticism from some online users for sharing Frank Ocean's performance on Instagram with the comment, "legendary." However, neither Jisoo nor her agency, YG Entertainment, addressed the issue at the time.

RM's response reflects the growing awareness of cultural sensitivity and the need for clear communication in the global music industry, especially when dealing with lyrics and content that could be potentially misunderstood or misinterpreted.
