For this exhibition, Shiota Chiharu made a white cave by weaving thousands of bundles of white yarn in a large space of 3500sqft. This installation’s title is
In Memory which is the same title of exhibition. She used white thread for this exhibition, not red thread which is Shiota’s indentity.
Shiota also explained the reason why she used white thread for In Memory. She said “I was influenced by the book ‘White Book’, written by Korean author Han Gang. There was a part where the baby who died two hours after it was born in the novel reminded me of the time I had an abortion.”
“I think the color white is a symbol of death but also life.” Shiota said. “When there’s an end, there is always another beginning. This is the reason why I used white thread for this exhibition.”
continues until August 21 at Gana Art Center. Gana Art Center is open every day except Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
