Colombian architecture studio 5 Sólidos has completed a stunning duplex penthouse in Medellín that pays homage to 1980s design aesthetics through the use of vintage glass brick, luxurious red velvet furnishings, and bold material choices. The 390-square-meter PH8 penthouse, located on the top floor of an apartment building, was designed for a restaurateur client described by the team as having "a taste for good conversation and well-considered living."

The two-story apartment is connected by a dramatic concrete staircase featuring a cherry-red railing and vintage glass brick cladding along one side. A suspended sculpture by artist Alejandro Tobón hangs above the stairway, creating an artistic focal point. The lower level is dedicated to private spaces, including bedrooms and bathrooms, with floors covered in grey granite and a large walnut volume that encloses the intimate areas.

The primary bedroom showcases the design's attention to luxurious details with a green velvet headboard and slim metallic pendant lights suspended above the bedside tables. The ensuite bathroom is wrapped in silver-blue stone and features a striking black freestanding tub at its center, along with a large shower bordered by floor-to-ceiling windows. A slim entryway contains a painting by Víctor Garcés, tucked into a niche within the walnut millwork, which the designers say evokes "the quiet discipline of a Japanese interior."

The upper level serves as the social heart of the penthouse, centered around a large open living space and kitchen area. Dark green terrazzo floors and an exposed coffered ceiling define this level, while floor-to-ceiling windows lined with linen curtains provide abundant natural light. A large curved wooden volume cuts through one side of the floor, concealing a restroom and small bedroom behind hidden doors.

The kitchen area, positioned behind the staircase, features stainless steel pendant lights hanging above a large dark green marble island, with brushed metal serving as a reflective backsplash. The living area showcases a custom-made low-slung modular red velvet couch created by 5 Sólidos, complemented by an earthen coffee table and bench. Additional furnishings include Rey chairs by Hay, Flos Horizzontale lamps, and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system. Glass doors adjacent to the kitchen lead to a spacious outdoor patio.

"The apartment channels the spirit of 1980s interiors while embracing a contemporary, detail-oriented approach," explained the design team. "High above the Medellín skyline, penthouse PH8 unfolds as an evocative blend of expressive materials, local art, and timeless design references – anchored in a deep dialogue between past and present." Led by founder Daniel Correa, 5 Sólidos recently gained international attention for completing a house for music artist J Balvin in Medellín, demonstrating their expertise in creating sophisticated residential spaces that blend historical references with modern luxury.
