In a significant development, a town in London has officially designated "Kimchi Day" for the first time in Europe, celebrating the iconic Korean dish and its cultural significance. Korean media, including Yonhap News, reported on July 12th that the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames unanimously voted to proclaim November 22nd as Kimchi Day during a recent assembly meeting.
The decision by the Kingston Council holds special significance as the Royal Borough is home to the largest population of Korean expatriates in the region, according to a news release issued by the Kingston Council's Liberal Democrats in January. Council leader Andreas Kirsch expressed the borough's enthusiasm, noting that this year also marks the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and the United Kingdom.
The Liberal Democrats highlighted the central role of kimchi in Korean food and culture, emphasizing the growing global interest in Korean culture, commonly referred to as Hallyu or the Korean Wave, which presents numerous opportunities for Kingston.
Korean Ambassador to London, Yoon Yeocheol, expressed his hopes that Kimchi Day would deepen the British people's understanding of Korean food and culture while strengthening friendship and promoting mutual cooperation between the two countries. During a reception preceding the council meeting, Ambassador Yoon extended his gratitude to Kingston for establishing Kimchi Day, adding that the beloved condiment would "spice up" the friendship between both nations.
The plan to designate Kimchi Day in the borough was first announced in January, following the Korean government's official designation of November 22nd as the legal anniversary of Kimchi Day on November 22, 2020. The chosen date signifies the month of November, when kimchi is traditionally prepared ahead of winter, as well as the 22 health benefits associated with this beloved Korean staple.
The establishment of Kimchi Day in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames represents a milestone in promoting cultural diversity and fostering stronger ties between the United Kingdom and Korea. This historic occasion serves as a testament to the growing recognition and appreciation of Korean cuisine and culture on the global stage.
