The highly anticipated comedy series "Not Others" debuted on Monday, featuring acclaimed actress Jeon Hye-jin and versatile singer-actor Choi Soo-young in the lead roles of a special mother-daughter relationship. Based on the popular webcomic of the same name, the ENA series delves into the joys and challenges of romance and life as it revolves around Eun-mi (played by Jeon), a single mother, and her adult daughter, Jin-hee (portrayed by Choi). The heartwarming narrative explores the complexities of their bond and showcases the ups and downs of their shared experiences.
Eun-mi, portrayed by Jeon, became a mother during her teenage years and courageously raised her daughter as a physiotherapist. Despite their generation gap, Eun-mi maintains a vibrant and open friendship with her now-29-year-old daughter, Jin-hee. Meanwhile, Jin-hee, a composed police officer leading a patrol team at a local precinct, assumes the role of the responsible caretaker in their relationship, despite frequent quarrels with her mother.
During a press conference held at the Stanford Hotel in Seoul's Mapo District on Monday, Choi expressed her delight at the opportunity to work alongside Jeon, whom she has long admired.
"Jeon has been someone I've been a fan of for a long time. I've imagined various scenarios of working with her, as colleagues or even as sisters, but I never expected to portray a mother-daughter dynamic," Choi shared. "For me, this series and the chance to collaborate with Jeon is like receiving a beautiful gift."
Choi further described her character, Jin-hee, as a responsible daughter who confronts a crisis in her relationship with her mother.
"Jin-hee always looks out for her mischievous mother. As she approaches her thirties, she finds herself caught between her role as a daughter and her evolving relationship with her mother," Choi explained. "When I read the script for this series, I was captivated by its refreshing narrative approach."
To effectively immerse herself in the role, Choi revealed that she made an effort to establish a quick rapport with Jeon.
"Since we were portraying a mother-daughter duo, I believed it was best for me to swiftly build a close relationship with her and not perceive her as a difficult person. We even went out for drinks a few times," Choi shared.
Jeon reciprocated the sentiment, expressing her instant connection with Choi. "When I heard that Choi from the girl group Girls' Generation would be playing the daughter, I was intrigued. During our first table reading, I was impressed by her talent," Jeon recalled. "It felt like we had already been close for a long time. Choi was Jin-hee from the very beginning until the end."
Directed by Lee Min-woo, known for his work on the 2016 romance series "Cinderella and the Four Knights," and written by scriptwriter Min Sun-ae, "Not Others" presents a humorous and relatable story.
"'Not Others' may not feature extravagant characters or grand narratives, but I wanted to create an easily relatable series that resonates with ordinary people, much like our neighbors and families," director Lee explained.
With the compelling performances of Jeon Hye-jin and Choi Soo-young, "Not Others" promises to deliver a heartwarming tale of love, family, and the enduring bond between a mother and daughter.
