In a surprising development, Kyoungyoon, a prominent figure in the boy band DKZ, is set to depart from the group as he embarks on his mandatory military service, according to an announcement made by his agency, Dongyo Entertainment, on Monday.
Kyoungyoon's absence from group activities began in April, prompted by a whirlwind of events surrounding his family's alleged connections to the contentious pseudo-Christian religious organization Jesus Morning Star (JMS). Media outlets and fans brought these alleged ties to light in March, leading to Kyoungyoon's temporary hiatus.
Dongyo Entertainment released a statement, revealing that Kyoungyoon's withdrawal from group engagements was primarily attributed to health concerns. The agency noted that during his break, Kyoungyoon focused on recuperation and received appropriate medical attention, ultimately experiencing a significant improvement in his health.
In light of his recovery, a thorough discussion between Kyoungyoon and his agency ensued, culminating in the decision for him to conclude his tenure with DKZ and embark on his obligatory military service.
The agency acknowledged Kyoungyoon's understanding of the impact his absence might have on fans and fellow DKZ members. However, the statement did not address his family's purported involvement with the controversial religious group.
Kyoungyoon took the opportunity to address his departure through a heartfelt handwritten letter shared on the same day. In it, he expressed regret over the concerns he may have caused to the fandom, known as Dong-ari, and expressed gratitude for their unwavering support.
Reflecting on the past five months, Kyoungyoon divulged that his decision to part ways with DKZ was not taken lightly. He implored fans to comprehend the rationale behind his choice.
The backdrop of this saga traces back to the Netflix documentary series "In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal," which aired on March 3rd. The series delved into several controversial religious groups, including the contentious Jesus Morning Star (JMS) founded by Jeong Myung-seok, who has been convicted of heinous crimes involving the exploitation of young women affiliated with the cult.
Following the series' release, a wave of attention swept through various communities, prompting the circulation of a comprehensive list featuring the names and addresses of businesses allegedly run by JMS adherents. Among them was a café owned by Kyoungyoon's parents in Yeongdeok County, North Gyeongsang.
Kyoungyoon had previously stated that his parents severed ties with JMS and temporarily suspended their café's operations.
As Kyoungyoon steps away from DKZ and transitions into a new phase of life, the narrative continues to unravel, leaving fans and industry observers pondering the implications of his departure amidst a backdrop of controversy and personal challenges.
