KOREA-ARAB SOCIETY
Hosted by the Korea-Arab Society, the Arab Film Festival is a unique platform in Korea dedicated to presenting cinematic gems from the Arab countries. This year, audiences will be treated to a selection of nine captivating works that highlight the rich storytelling and cultural nuances of the region. From July 27 to 30, the festival will take place at the Busan Cinema Center in Busan, followed by screenings from August 3 to 6 at Arthouse Momo within Ewha Women's University in Seoul.
Setting the stage for the festival is the opening film, "Kira & El Gin" (2022), directed by Marwan Hamed. Inspired by true events, the film delves into the 1919 Egyptian Revolution, immersing viewers in a pivotal moment in history.
Among the standout films is "All Roads Lead to Rome" (2022), helmed by director Lara Saba. This Lebanese production follows the journey of a renowned actor who finds himself in the countryside, preparing for the role of the Pope. Unexpectedly, he encounters a near collision with a woman, leading to a series of comical and poignant events.
The festival's programming team has handpicked two films as their top recommendations for this year's lineup: "Mediterranean Fever" (2022) and "Within Sand" (2022).
"Mediterranean Fever" explores the life of an aspiring writer grappling with depression, offering a profound portrayal of human struggles. The film garnered critical acclaim, earning the coveted Best Screenplay award in the Un Certain Regard category at the 75th Cannes International Film Festival last year.
On the other hand, "Within Sand" takes audiences on an exhilarating action-packed journey through the desert. The film centers around a traveler's quest to reunite with his pregnant wife, while being relentlessly pursued by a wolf. The intensity and breathtaking visuals of this work promise an immersive cinematic experience.
This year's Arab Film Festival offers more than just film screenings. Special programs designed for Arab film enthusiasts include a unique opportunity to engage directly with director Lara Saba. On August 5, following the screening of "All Roads Lead to Rome," moviegoers can participate in a talk session with the esteemed director at Arthouse Momo. Additionally, talk sessions featuring directors and critics will take place throughout the festival, fostering insightful conversations about the featured films.
As the Arab Film Festival returns for its 12th edition, it continues to serve as a bridge between cultures, providing a captivating window into the vibrant world of Arab cinema. From thought-provoking historical dramas to lighthearted comedies and gripping action films, this year's lineup promises to captivate and inspire audiences, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Arab storytelling on the Korean cinematic stage.
